Looking Back at Community Health Improvement Week

September 5, 2025 by Mallory Bove, MPH, CHES

At Children’s National Hospital, Community Health Improvement Week (CHIW) 2025, hosted in alliance with the American Hospital Association, was a vibrant celebration of advocacy, partnership, and purpose. From June 9 to June 13, Children’s National came together with community partners, faculty, staff, and regional leaders to spotlight the collective work being done to advance health equity for children and families across the region.

The week began on Monday with the Government Affairs Council Spring Meeting, where we reviewed the latest legislative session and shared policy updates from District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and the federal level. This conversation reflected our ongoing efforts to improve child health outcomes through strategic advocacy. That same day, the CHAI Affiliate Faculty Roundtable offered an opportunity for faculty to present their latest work in community health improvement, and we proudly recognized the recipients of this year’s CHAI Affiliate Faculty Awards.

On Tuesday, we hosted Celebrating Our Partners in Child Health, a joyful gathering that brought together our hospital and community collaborators. Attendees received updates on the upcoming 2025 pediatric Community Health Needs Assessment, and the 2025 Community Health Improvement Awards were presented to individuals and organizations whose efforts are transforming health in their communities. With over 80 people in attendance, the room was filled with energy, gratitude, and shared commitment.

Wednesday’s events took on a deeper focus with the Judy and Peter Kovler Community Health Grand Rounds, featuring keynote speaker Tonia Wellons, President & CEO of the Greater Washington Community Foundation. Her keynote address emphasized the importance of advancing equity and community-centered care through philanthropy and meaningful partnerships. Later in the day, the Together We Thrive: Parental Mental Health Webinar, co-hosted with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, highlighted how caregivers’ mental health plays a vital role in shaping children’s emotional and psychological well-being.

Thursday was all about giving back. During Community Benefit Service Day, Children’s National staff volunteered at our hospital-based Food Pharmacies, helping provide healthy food to families who need it most. While a small group participated, the impact of their service was tangible and heartfelt.

We wrapped up the week on Friday with Dr. Bear’s University Day with Legislators, a special event designed to introduce policymakers to the inner workings of Children’s National. Attendees were given a behind-the-scenes look at care delivery and the essential role our staff play in driving positive change across the health system.

Community Health Improvement Week reminded us that advancing child health is a team effort, one that requires collaboration, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to equity. Thank you to everyone who helped make this week a success. We look forward to continuing this vital work, together.
